Photography Genres

There are different Genres within Photography. Some of these are; Abstract, Contemporary, Historical, Photojournalism, Commercial and Editorial.

Abstract Photography

Abstract photography is exactly like Abstract art (painting), the person taking the photo won't show the object as a whole but will take into consideration the shape, pattern, colour, angles etc. So, people looking at the photo will only understand what is implied.

Contemporary Photography

Contemporary photography is to do with the 'now'. Meaning it gives you a sense of this era, it deals with problems happening now.

Historical Photography

Historical Photography shows what the previous eras looked like and shows all the problems they had back then and it also shows how times have changed as people have grown.

Photojournalism Photography

This photography is a form of journalism that creates images for publication in order to tell a story. It is now only still images which refer to this but sometimes videos can be labeled this. It's distinguished from other branches of photography as they comply a rigid framework that demands they tell the story honestly and impartially but also in strictly journalist terms.

Comercial Photography

Commercial Photography is taking pictures for selling or promoting uses, for example in adverts, selling a product, promoting a business, Food Photographs, Fashion and Portrait.

Editorial Photography

This type of photography refers to pictures in a magazine that aren't promoting or selling things. The photos go along with the articles and even the cover of the magazine.

Out of all these Genres the one which influenced me most was probably Editorial and Contemporary. This is because I like the way the Editorial images allow people to be interested in them and Contemporary explains the problems we are facing now. I'd place my work within the Contemporary Genre as my work contains this type of feel to it.
